Bedroom with floral wallpaper, striped headboard, brown pillows and lamp. Text: The Ultimate Guide to Wallpaper in Rental Homes.

Renting doesn't have to mean living with someone else's blank walls.

I know I can’t be the only one who rented and couldn’t help but feel stuck. No creative liberties, no impromptu projects. You can rearrange the furniture, hang a few frames, buy a plant, swap out the shower curtain. But the walls themselves are usually off limits. No paint, no permanent changes, nothing that looks like a decision you actually got to make.

It's hard to feel at home somewhere that still looks like it doesn’t actually belong to you. The same neutral, ‘landlord special’ walls that were there before you moved in, and will still be there long after you leave. You start to wonder if "making it feel like yours" is even possible in a rental.

That's where peel and stick wallpaper comes in.

Peel and stick wallpaper is the answer more renters are turning to, and for good reason. It goes up without paste or permanent change, and it comes down clean when you move out. No deposit lost, no landlord drama, and no more feeling like your personal style has gone out the window.

If you've never used it before, you probably have the same three questions everyone asks:

Can you actually use peel and stick wallpaper for rental homes or an apartment?

Does peel and stick wallpaper damage walls?

How do you remove it without losing your deposit?

Let's go through all three, honestly.

More than 44 million U.S. households rent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's latest numbers. That's a lot of renters staring at some blank walls wondering if there's a chance to have a home that feels like “them.”

There is, and it starts with picking the right wallpaper. Willow is a good place to start. A personal favorite of mine, it feels right in any room, yet it is bold enough to feel like an actual decision. If you want to see the full range first, our shop of peel and stick designs is worth a look before we get into the how-to.

01. Yes, and Here's the Catch

Most leases ban paint and traditional wallpaper. Peel and stick is different: nothing about the wall changes underneath, and there's no paste to worry about.

Still, send your landlord a quick text before you order. Most say yes without a second thought. Apartment Therapy asked property managers how they really feel, and the split is worth knowing.

Get the yes in writing, even a saved text thread. Then pick your pattern and make the place yours.

02. Where the Real Risk Actually Is

Quality peel and stick on a properly painted wall won't damage the paint or the drywall. It holds firm while it's up and lets go cleanly when it comes down.

The real risk is in a few spots: paint less than 30 days old, heavily textured walls like popcorn or orange peel, and thin, cheap material that tears.

The wallpaper is rarely the problem. The wall underneath usually is.

03. Remove It, Keep Your Deposit

Most horror stories come from rushing. Take it from me, a serial rusher. Give yourself time, not twenty minutes.

  • Start at a bottom corner and pull slowly at 45 degrees

  • Work in small sections, not full strips

  • If it resists, warm it with a hair dryer on low

  • Wipe residue with warm, soapy water, never a scraper

  • Let the wall dry before your final walkthrough

That's it. Patience and a slow hand.

Finding Wallpaper for Rental Homes That Actually Works

So, what actually makes the best wallpaper for rental homes? A pressure-sensitive adhesive that holds firm but lifts clean. A material with enough body that it doesn't tear mid-removal.

Two patterns come up again and again when renters ask where to start. Rosaria is soft enough for a nursery or a bedroom that needs to feel calm. Fillius proves stripes never really go out of style, rental or not.

Renting may be long term or short term, but your walls should always feel like home.
